| Could It Happen To You? | Could it happen to you? Yes it can! And for to many ferrets each year it does happen. Most state health departments call for destroying ferrets accused of biting regardless of evidence or provocation. Florida is among this group. Unfortunately for innocent ferrets and their owners, the Center for Disease Control supports this stance. Is anyone doing anything about this? Is there anything you can do? The answer to both questions is YES!
The first part is completed and the CDC has agreed that preliminary results look favorable. However, the study is a six part test (on each strain of rabies virus). The CDC has announced that they will not change their position until all six parts are completed. The downside is that there are no governmental agencies willing to provide the funding to finish the tests. Funding will have to be raised. |

Rabies results - negative. A ferret owner takes in a lost ferret. A visitors child claims the ferret attacked him unprovoked. The mother files a million dollar lawsuit against the good Samaritan and demands the ferret be euthanized. Witnesses state that the ferret never bit or scratch the boy, that he has a history of injuries resulting from abusive handling of the family’s cat. Results - The good Samaritan is deemed as being the owner since he is in possession of the ferret and is spending thousands on lawyers and court costs. Money he won’t recover regardless of the outcome. Rabies outcome - the ferret was whisked out of state where he lives rabies free and alive. | ||||
